Thirty-nine people over the past decade have committed suicide off the 155-foot-high Aurora Bridge eight in 2006 alone and counselors are regularly brought in to help office workers deal with the shock of seeing the leap or the bloody aftermath.

At least one woman, Sarah Edwards, drives on the left side of the street near her office ever since a body landed on the hood of a co-worker's car. City and state officials, meanwhile, are adding suicideprevention signs and telephones in hopes of reducing the death toll. The "suicide bridge," as the half-mile span has been occasionally called since it was built in 1931, carries as many as 45,000 vehicles a day on one of the main north-south highways through Seattle, passing over a narrow channel connecting Lake Washington and Lake Union. Suicide deaths Seattle's Aurora Bridge was the site of an increasing number of suicides in recent years, but still fewer than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Either way, they almost always die. (One person is said to have survived after landing in the water.) The neighborhood beneath the bridge used to be docks and warehouses, and the suicides went largely unnoticed. Moreover, any plans would need to go through a special public approval process because the bridge is a national historic landmark. Seattle's other major bridges the Ship Canal Bridge that carries Interstate 5 and the West Seattle Bridge see few suicides because they are closed to pedestrians. The city does not even want to talk about preventing people from walking on the Aurora Bridge, which is a pedestrian link between two densely populated hilltops. But the state has considered moving the pedestrian walkway to an enclosed structure below the span.

"They end up in our parking lot," said Katie Scharer, one of Edwards' co-workers at Cutter Buck, a sportswear company based in' the Adobe complex. "Nobody's ever totally used to it." Grief counselors regularly go to Cutter Buck, paying a visit as recently as a month ago. A few weeks ago, officials installed six emergency phones and 18 signs that read, "Suicidal?" and give the number of a 24-hour crisis line in bold yellow type. She was taken to the Marion County jail and later posted $7,500 bail. Beebe appoints Kennedy to 5th Circuit LITTLE ROCK (AP) Gov.

Mike Beebe has appointed James D. Kennedy of Russellville to serve as circuit judge for the Fifth Judicial District, which includes Franklin, Johnson and Pope Counties. Kennedy, 51, has served as a deputy prosecutor in the Fifth Judicial District and as Danville's city attorney. Kennedy, a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law, has been in private practice for more than 20 years. Kennedy replaces Judge John S.

Judge orders mental evaluation for inmate condemned to die TEXARKANA (AP) A federal judge has ordered a psychological examination for an inmate condemned to die for the killings of a Nevada County couple 15 years ago. Lawyers for Joe Louis Dansby, 54, say their client is mentally retarded and therefore ineligible for the death penalty under recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings.

U.S. District Judge Harry F. Barnes set a March 8 mental evaluation for Dansby. Dansby was sentenced to die in the May 16, 1992, killings of Jeff Lewis, 23, and Malissa Clark, 21, both of Prescott. The victims were found shot to death near a logging road in Nevada County.

Dansby was convicted in Miller County of capital murder and sentenced to death in 1997. Bill would offer credits for chicken litter LITTLE ROCK (AP) Under a bill filed Friday, Arkansas poultry farmers would be given a tax credit for transporting chicken litter to other parts of the state for use as fertilizer. House Speaker Benny Petrus and Reps. Scott Sullivan, D-De Queen, and Chris Thyer, D-Jonesboro, filed the bill to provide a $15 tax credit for each ton of excess litter transported outside the "nutrient surplus areas." Petrus, D-Stuttgart, said the bill would help answer the concerns raised in a legal battle between Arkansas and neighboring Oklahoma over pollution in the Illinois River watershed. Petrus said the bill would provide up to $2 million a year in tax credits for the poultry litter.

Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson is suing 14 Arkansas-based poultry companies, accusing them of polluting the Illinois watershed with chicken litter, and expects to go to trial in 2008. Dali works turn out to be fake ROGERS (AP) A woman from a city better known for its paper mill than its works on paper is charged with selling fake drawings she claimed were originals by surrealist Salvador Dali. Donna Lynn Payne, 60, of Pine Bluff is charged in Benton County with three felony counts of criminal simulation. A probable cause affidavit says Payne advertised a Dali on eBay last year. A Rogers man was the high bidder at $2,750.

The piece was supposed to be an original drawing in ink and charcoal. The man sent Payne a cashiers check for $2,814 for the artwork, plus shipping. The two conducted further transactions, at least one that included a work purported to be by Pablo Picasso. In all, the man sent Payne $10,978, court records show. When the man sought to have the Dalis authenticated, he learned that they were fakes, according to court documents.

The man complained to Payne, who promised a refund but then cut off all contact, police said.
